Hotel Du Vin, St Andrews

St Andrews, Fife, Scotland

With something of the air of a gentlemen's club, this hotel is cosy, cool and characterful, but avoids lapsing into ‘theme park’; not easy given its enviable position overlooking the first tee of the town’s famous Old Course. It's well-placed for golfers, or perhaps a romantic walk on the ‘Chariots of Fire’ beach.

Location

9 / 10

On ‘The Scores’, a quiet, bosky street of grand houses and university buildings overlooking the great sweep of St Andrew’s Bay and West Sands beach, five minutes’ walk from the sights and shops of the old town and the first tee of the Old Course. St Andrews is about more than golf, with the handsome university buildings and camera-ready castle ruins just up the street and Dundee’s outpost of the V&A museum 30 minutes’ drive away.

Style and Character

8 / 10

A substantial Victorian villa on the outside, inside it’s a smart chain hotel, all deep and warm colours with a side order of sharp styling and subdued lighting. There are just enough references to golf and whisky to give a sense of place – think tweedy, not twee. It can get busy, and you may have to navigate a gaggle of golf bags to get to reception at busy times, but it’s less relentlessly like a golfer’s clubhouse than other nearby hotels.

Service and Facilities

9 / 10

The brand is all about wine, so a good sommelier is to be devoutly hoped-for, but the rest of the staff have a friendly manner that sits well with the atmosphere of the hotel. There’s help on hand from a concierge and the luxury of 24-hour room service – unusually, you can order from the restaurant’s full à la carte lunch and dinner menus.

Rooms

9 / 10

The hotel’s clubby theme continues with plenty of wood and leather, rich colours and whimsical wallpapers. Beds are particularly good, with hand-sprung mattresses and soothing Egyptian cotton sheets while bathrooms have hot water in good drench showers and indulgent L’Occitane en Provence toiletries. For sea views go for the Deluxe category or higher (and if you really trade up, the free-standing bath in the Tom Morris Suite has a splendid sea view). Single rooms are somewhat Spartan – there’s even one with no window. Think of them as dormitories for golfers.

Food and Drink

7 / 10

You’ll find a good list of whiskies, with wine (of course) and champagne by the glass, and a classic cocktail list in the lounge-like bar. You’ll also find sandwiches, burgers and other light dishes. Just beyond, the sunroom is a pleasant retreat throughout the day (or for afternoon tea) and there’s an outdoor terrace (at the back of the hotel) if the weather is good. You won’t find any surprises in the Bistro beyond the bouillabaisse, but with steaks or chicken Milanese you won’t go hungry– particularly if you fill up on the very good bread. Breakfast options include a classic full breakfast, egg Benedict and grilled kippers.
